Youth Summer Swordplay
Paladins, Dwarfs and Rouge Hunters need apply.

Ever wondered what it would be like to wield a knightly sword, a Viking axe or a pirate’s cutlass?  Explore the Higgins Armory Museum in a completely new way this summer.  Sign- up for one of our Summer Swordplay Series classes and step in the footsteps of legends.  Sessions run from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm and from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm.  Sign up for both and bring a lunch!

Each session begins with a focus on the Higgins collection and follows with a 1 ½ hours of swordplay training.  Led by a senior Museum interpreter and a certified swordplay instructor, the classes are fun, physical components are lead by a certified swordplay instructor.

No experience necessary.  All safety and swordplay equipment provided. The Summer Swordplay Series is designed specifically for youth 10 to 15 years old.

Session Descriptions

Knightly Arts Academy
Focus on medieval weapons, including longsword and dagger.
Want to learn how to fight like a knight? Live the adventure. Wield the squire’s dirk and the knightly longsword as you follow in the footsteps of legendary knights.

Defending Sherwood
Focus on sword and buckler, quarterstaff, dagger, and cutlass.
Whether fighting off Prince John’s men or scrabbling with the ruffians in Sherwood Forest Robin Hood and Maid Marian were ready to defend right versus might. Explore the variety of weapons at their disposal and learn some of the footwork required for a good fight in the Great Hall.

A Viking Adventure
Focus on daggers, battle axes, spears, and Viking sword and shield.
Were your Viking raids unsuccessful last summer? Were you bullied by a berserk at the last winter feast? Do you have a hólmganga duel coming up and want to sharpen your fighting skills? If so, then join us to learn some of the combat skills of medieval Europe's most fearsome warriors: the Vikings.

Introduction to Piracy
Focus on cutlass, dagger, small sword, grappling and creative use of wordplay.
Avast ye scurvy dogs! Be prepared to defend your Jolly Roger with the fury of your cutlass and slash of your dagger. Explore what it takes to keep even the most ferocious Barbary pirate foes at bay.
